We Don't Do Halloween
Hey y’all, here’s what I’m going to tell you.
Halloween is this Saturday, so let’s talk about it while there’s still time to make the call.

We don’t do Halloween at our house.
I know folks say it’s just candy and costumes. Just fun for the kids. But look at what the whole night is built on. Fear. Death. Witches. Demons. Horror. That’s not a little thing, and it isn’t harmless just because we put a smile on it.
Halloween didn’t start in a church. It came out of an old pagan night where folks thought the dead walked around. And the world took it and ran with it. Now it’s skeletons on the porch, fake blood in the yard, and folks paying good money to walk through a house and get scared on purpose.
Ephesians 5:11 says have nothing to do with the worthless things of darkness, but expose them instead.
That’s pretty plain to me. It doesn’t say dress them up. It doesn’t say make them cute. It says have nothing to do with them.
And I know what some folks say. We do trunk or treat. We call it a fall festival. We’re redeeming it.
Y’all, putting candy in a church parking lot doesn’t change what the night is. You can’t dress darkness up in a church t-shirt and call it outreach. If we have to rename the thing to feel ok about it, that ought to tell us something.
2 Corinthians 6:17 says come out from among them and be separate.
And look, I know kids see everybody else doing it and they ask why can’t we. That’s a hard spot for a parent, I know it is. But our kids don’t need us to be like everybody else. They need us to show them some things we just don’t do, and tell them why. They’ll remember that a whole lot longer than one night of candy.
So that’s where I land. We sit this one out. Porch light off. And we’ll have a good night at home with our family, because time with them is never wasted.
I ain’t saying it to fight with anybody. I’m saying it because a lot of Christians are on the fence right now and somebody needs to say it out loud.
Where do you land on it? Tell me over on the Facebook page. And send this to somebody who’s been going back and forth on it.
God bless y’all, see you later, John
