Hey y’all, I want to talk about something that gets mixed up a lot, even by folks who’ve been in church for years. It’s this right here: what gets a person into heaven, and what our good deeds are actually for. Those are two different things, and when we mash them together we end up either scared all the time or lazy. The Bible keeps them separate, and once you see it, it’ll set you free and light a fire under you at the same time.

Where Halloween Really Comes From

Hey y’all, it’s Halloween, so let’s do something different today.

A few days ago I shared why our house sits this night out. Today I want to walk through the history, because most of us grew up with Halloween and never once heard where it came from.

It starts about 2,000 years ago in Ireland, with a people called the Celts, the tribes of Ireland, Scotland, and Britain back then. Their big fall festival was called Samhain. You say it SAH win, and the name means summer’s end. It fell right around November 1, when the harvest was in and folks got ready for the dark, cold half of the year.

Remember the Sabbath Day, to Keep It Holy

Exodus 20:8 says, “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.”

This year our family is trying to live that out more intentionally. We’re setting aside the seventh day for rest and worship, and we’re learning what that looks like for us.

The seventh day is Saturday. It’s the day God rested when He was done with creation. Genesis 2:2 says, “And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.”

Don't Just Read the Bible. Understand It.

Hey y’all, here’s something that’s been heavy on my heart lately.

A lot of folks read the Bible, and I’m glad they do. But reading it and understanding it are not always the same thing.

Here’s what I mean. If you pull one verse out by itself, you can make the Bible say just about anything you want. Folks do it every day. They take one line, leave the rest of the chapter sitting there, and build a whole belief on it. And somebody watching them believes it too, and off it goes.

We Don't Do Halloween

Halloween is this Saturday, so let’s talk about it while there’s still time to make the call.

We don’t do Halloween at our house.

I know folks say it’s just candy and costumes. Just fun for the kids. But look at what the whole night is built on. Fear. Death. Witches. Demons. Horror. That’s not a little thing, and it isn’t harmless just because we put a smile on it.

Hey y’all, I need y’all to pray today.

I read this today and I can’t quit thinking about it, so I wanted to share it with y’all.

Two brothers in Pakistan, Qaisar and Amoon Ayub, got arrested for blasphemy over some stuff that got posted on a WordPress site. Blasphemy over there means saying something bad about Muhammad, their prophet, and the law in Pakistan says death for it. The site had their names and contact info on it, so they got blamed for it.

How Do I Know Jesus Really Rose From the Dead?

It’s a fair question. And it’s one every Christian ought to be able to answer.

A lot of folks will say Jesus was a good teacher. Some will say He was a prophet. And they’ll stop right there. But our faith doesn’t stand on Jesus being a good teacher. It stands on whether or not He walked out of the tomb.

Paul said the same thing in 1 Corinthians 15:14, “And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith.” If He didn’t come out of the tomb, none of the rest matters. So here’s why I’m sure He did.

Jonah Didn't Run in Fear. He Ran in Hate.

Most of us learned Jonah as a kids’ story. A man runs from God, gets on a boat, a storm comes, a big fish swallows him, he prays, the fish spits him out, and he goes and does what he was told. The lesson we got was simple: don’t run from God, because God will find you.

That’s true. It’s just not the whole story, and it misses the reason Jonah ran in the first place.

Stop letting a survey tell you what Christians believe about empathy.

A new PRRI survey released Tuesday says 54% of white evangelicals believe empathy can become dangerous when it leads people away from a society guided by God’s truth. Only 42% called empathy a foundational moral value. Every headline writer in America is about to use that to paint evangelicals as cold and heartless. Do not buy it.

The Earth Is Yahweh's: Psalm 24:1

This was the verse of the day on my Bible app this morning, and it has been sitting on me ever since:

“The earth is Yahweh’s, as well as its fullness, the world, and those who dwell in it.” (Psalm 24:1, LSB)

Read that slow. The earth is His. Not just the ground and the trees and the rivers: its fullness. Everything in it, and everybody on it. The people who dwell in it belong to Him too.

Hulvey Canceled a Sold-Out Show to Protect the Kids

Hulvey had a SOLD OUT show in Amsterdam. One hour before he was set to take the stage, he walked away from it.

Why? The venue had been switched without telling his team, and the new room was covered in pornographic images and explicit objects. He asked them to cover the walls. They refused, offered to cover part of a bar, and that was it.

Allie Beth Stuckey just said what a lot of pastors are afraid to say out loud: Christians should not be fans of horror.

Not the books. Not the movies. Not the true crime podcasts you fall asleep to. Her words: you should not be consuming content that is made to make you scared. Scripture says “Do not fear” over and over, and then we pay money to be terrified for entertainment and call it harmless.
